Holiday Open House, Lakewood History Museum

2 to 4 pm, Saturday, December 8

Dec 08, 2012

The Lakewood Historical Society officially welcomed the holiday season with an Open House on Saturday, December 8th from 2-4 pm at the Lakewood History Museum located at 6211 Mt Tacoma Dr SW in the historic Colonial Center. If you missed the Open House, you can still take in our array of beautiful vintage ornaments--they'll be on display through the holidays.

“Frosty the Snowman” greets visitors from the front window and the interior of the Museum is decorated in blue lights reminiscent of the 1950’s when the Center was the mecca of Pierce County for viewing holiday decorations and shopping. Fragile glass ornaments owned by Society members are displayed on the evergreen garland.

Refreshments were offered to visitors as they viewed the artwork of Bill Havens, the latest person to display in the Artist’s Corner. For the last 8 years Bill’s special interest has been Sumi painting, an ancient Chinese art form of expression. Also on display are pieces of Raku pottery, another oriental art form.

Visiting the museum (noon to 4pm, Weds-Sat) is also a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping. Special commemorative wine glasses and coins for the Tacoma Speedway are on sale. The Centennial of the Speedway was the major fund raising event celebrated by the Society in July. Raffle tickets for a one week vacation in Maui in September 2013 are only $5 each. This is a perfect stocking stuffer or enclosure in Christmas cards.

Be sure to bring donations of food items to include in the care packages for the soldiers of the 472nd Signal Company who deployed to Afghanistan in October. The next mailing will be sent in time for Christmas. Monetary donations are always welcome to help pay for postage. Your thoughtfulness is much appreciated by our troops who will be far from home and family this holiday season.
